Arthur’s Heroes: why we’ve launched a podcast

by Arthur's Place

Arthur’s Place is a very special community – and it’s all the amazing young people who join our social media networks and contribute to our website who make it so fabulous.

We’re always looking to give our community the broadest and best experience – and podcasts are a great way for you all to express yourselves and share your stories with us.

We hope the Arthur’s Heroes podcast will also help us raise awareness of young people with arthritis, and help people understand a bit more. You might want to share the podcast with your friends or family as another way of explaining what it’s like to be a young person with arthritis. Together, we can get your stories heard!

Here, Jess, our wonderful podcast host, explains how and why she got involved:

I love talking. My family and friends would all attest to the fact that I have been a chatterbox for about the past 23 years. I also love podcasts. If the radio isn’t on in my house, then I’m listening to a podcast – I get through about five a day, and when my joints flare, listening to a podcast is often the only way to get to sleep.

So when I read on the Arthur’s Place website that they were looking for people to get involved in making audio content, I leapt at the chance (not literally, with these hips!)

I was instantly sold on the idea of Arthur’s Heroes! Getting to talk to OTHER PEOPLE with arthritis? Another one of those things that I’ve always wanted to do and never had the chance to, until I discovered Arthur’s Place. This sounded like a fantastic opportunity to combine my love for talking, my desire to try making podcasts and my interest in other people, especially those somewhere along the same journey as me.

We decided that, before embarking on conversations with other Arthur’s Heroes, we would begin with the first Arthur’s Hero – the founder of Arthur’s Place, Andrea. We chatted a bit in advance on the phone and planned a few questions to ask one another – and I realised how much research and preparation goes into the shows I greedily consume. Somehow, before I knew it, I was sitting at my kitchen table in sunny Wimbledon, headphones in, talking to Andrea. It was fabulous! We had a brilliant conversation, the details of which I will not go into – Episode 1 is there for you to listen to!

Since that first day, I have chatted to various Arthur’s Heroes who have all done brilliant, exciting, innovative things in their lives. Their diagnoses of arthritis are not defining them, but do play an important role in all of the stories I uncover.

Every guest has overcome adversity to get to the point they’re at today, and each has a unique tale to tell – be that their battle to come to terms with using their arthritis to their own advantage, pursuing their dreams despite it, or watching and supporting their loved one through a journey that they can’t share, and can’t see.

In Episode 1 I also talk about my own journey in creating Codeword Pineapple, who are working to make invisible disabilities more visible.
